What to expect at the Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy Visit?

Your first visit to pelvic floor physiotherapy is usually a mix of conversation, education, and assessment. It’s designed to be informative, comfortable, and tailored to your needs. Here’s what you can expect:

History & Discussion
The physiotherapist will start with a detailed conversation about your symptoms, medical history, lifestyle, and goals.
-
This helps your physiotherapist understand the whole picture and what might be contributing to your symptoms.
-
Common questions cover things like:
-
Bladder and bowel habits (frequency, leakage, urgency, constipation).
-
Pelvic pain, pressure, or heaviness.
-
Sexual function.
-
Pregnancy, birth, surgeries, or injuries.
-
Daily activities, exercise, and posture
-
Education
-
You’ll learn about the pelvic floor muscles, how they work, and how they might be related to your symptoms.
-
They’ll explain possible treatment approaches (exercise, lifestyle strategies, hands-on therapy, relaxation techniques).
-
You’ll have the chance to ask questions and set priorities.
Physical Assessment
-
General assessment: posture, breathing, abdominal muscle function, hip and lower back mobility.
-
Pelvic floor assessment (with your consent):
-
Can be external (visual observation, palpation of muscles around the pelvis, hips, and lower abdomen).
-
Can be internal (through the vagina or rectum) to directly assess muscle tone, strength, endurance, coordination, and tenderness.
-
Internal exams are always explained thoroughly, optional, and done with consent—you can decline or stop anytime.
-

Treatment Planning
-
Based on findings, you’ll get a personalized plan, which may include:
-
Pelvic floor muscle training (strengthening or relaxation).
-
Breathing and posture work.
-
Bladder/bowel strategies (timing, urge control, diet advice).
-
Relaxation or pain management techniques.
-
Home exercises or activity modifications.

-
Next Steps
-
The physiotherapist will explain how often to come back and what progress to expect.
-
Many people notice gradual improvements over a few weeks with consistent follow-up.
👉 The overall goal of the first session is to understand your body, reduce worries, and give you practical starting points—not to do everything at once.

How to prepare for a Clinic visit?
Clients with higher risk profiles and/or weakened immune systems could consider alternatives for care such as TeleHealth or a Home Visit.
A contactless payment terminal is available for payment and receipts will be delivered via email whenever possible.
Hand sanitizer is provided in the waiting room and treatment room for maintaining hand hygiene upon entry and before leaving the facility.
The treatment room/office and common areas are regularly cleaned and disinfected at all touch surfaces, including office and entrance door handles (inside and outside), treatment tables, and furniture.

How to prepare for a home visit?
In preparation for the home visit all the clients are asked to wash hands before the session begins. A therapist will come to your home with all the equipment needed and you just have to open the door!
